Boys and Girls Clubs recognize the best potential in every child. In 11 locations across Central Vancouver Island and more than 650 locations nationwide, Boys and Girls Clubs offer a safe, supportive place for kids outside of school.
We help families meet all of the physical, social and emotional needs of their children, providing:
- Healthy physical activities
- Healthy meals and snacks
- Academic support
- Skills and character development
- A chance to build positive relationships with peers and mentors
The need for funding is urgent as more children, youth and families are counting on us daily for support.
The children, youth and families in your community need your help.
Your support will allow us to reach the children, youth and families who need us most.
The hours after school are critical to a child’s healthy growth and development. Research indicates that providing young people with access to structured, enriching recreational and social programs outside of school greatly benefits their peer relationships, emotional health and academic performance. If that after school time is unsupervised, however, it can be a dangerous, unhealthy time.
- 40% of all physical assaults involving children take place after school
- 20% of victims of violent crime are less than 17-years-old
- 25% of youth are victims of bullying
- 90% of children and youth do not meet Canada’s Physical Activity Guidelines
- 26% of children ages 6 to 11 are considered obese
Students who spend no time in extracurricular activities such as after school programs are:
- 49% more likely to have used drugs
- 37% more likely to become teen parents than those who spend one to four hours per week in after school programs.

Boys and Girls Clubs make a difference by giving young people a safe place to learn and grow. Last year, over 16,300 volunteers gave their time and skills to support our Clubs across Canada.
Volunteers can contribute in so many different ways at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Vancouver Island clubs and offices. Preparing snacks, planning activities, going on field trips, or just plain old hanging out with kids are some examples of how volunteers have helped our Clubs. Administrative assistance like filing, scanning and general reception are also a tremendous help. There are even opportunities for skill specific volunteering within our Communications, Sales and Marketing, Human Resources, Finance and Operations teams.
Please Note: All volunteers who wish to volunteer in a Boys and Girls Club will be required to undergo screening, training and appropriate police checks to ensure their safety.
If you are interested in volunteering with our agency, please contact the administration office or the Program Supervisor at the Club nearest you to discover what volunteer opportunities are available!
Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Vancouver island is also proud to support volunteer activities, community service and team building goals of our corporate partners and supporters. To learn more about our Corporate Volunteering Opportunities, please contact our Nanaimo Administration Office.
